Deena R. Merlen is a Partner at the law firm Reavis Page Jump LLP. Her practice areas include employment and labor law, intellectual property, media and entertainment transactions, business law, commercial transactions and dispute resolution. She is admitted to practice in both Connecticut and New York.
Ms. Merlen is a graduate of Oberlin College and New York Law School, where she ranked first in her law school graduating class, was an Editor of the Law Review and received the Outstanding Editor Award, multiple American Jurisprudence Awards, the Trustees’ Prize and a merit scholarship. Prior to her work with Reavis Page Jump LLP, Ms. Merlen served as Law Clerk to The Honorable Roger J. Miner of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, after which she joined Debevoise & Plimpton, where she practiced for over five years in the areas of corporate law and intellectual property.
In her employment and business practice, Ms. Merlen has extensive experience representing companies and individuals regarding claims involving alleged violation of state and federal anti-discrimination laws, unlawful retaliation, hostile work environment, sexual harassment, violation of fair labor standards, wage claims and other matters. She also regularly advises on and negotiates employment agreements, independent contractor arrangements, separation agreements and other services-related arrangements. In addition, Ms. Merlen provides business counsel and represents companies and individuals in transactional matters such as joint ventures, the purchase or sale of businesses and general corporate matters, including company formation, capitalization and governance.
In her intellectual property practice, from assisting a global company to protect, grow and exploit its worldwide portfolio of trademarks and other intellectual property assets, to helping a new company select and clear its future brand, Ms. Merlen is a trusted “go to” advisor to well-known companies, new enterprises and individuals alike. She helps clients develop and enforce their trademark, copyright and other intellectual property rights, represents clients in the purchase, sale or licensing of intellectual property assets, negotiates a wide range of agreements and provides strategic counsel to safeguard brand platforms and expand the value of intellectual property assets. Drawing from her previous career of over a decade in the arts and entertainment industry, Ms. Merlen’s practice also encompasses film, television, theatre, music, publishing, literary arts, performing arts, design and technology.
In addition to her service on the Board of Directors of Friendship Ambassadors Foundation Inc., Ms. Merlen is the Co-Chair of both the Employment Law Committee and the Entertainment, Media and Intellectual Property Law Committee of the Fairfield County Bar Association. Ms. Merlen also is a frequent guest speaker and moderator for employment law, intellectual property and entertainment industry panels on a variety of topics.
