Concept Note

For decades up to 2019, the world has witnessed catastrophic results from the mistreatment of the environment. Every year, 4.2 million deaths occur from pollution, and 300 million tons of plastic waste is dumped on land and in oceans. The wildlife extinction rate has reached 1,000 – 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate. Current trends suggest a worsening crisis, with the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change showing that global warming is likely to exceed 2C, significantly exacerbating drought, floods, extreme heat and weather, and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.

Addressing these environmental issues necessitates action from all countries, governments, businesses, and consumers. Consumer choices influence sustainable production and consumption patterns, with repercussions for the environment. This is especially so for the issues highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals: 6. Clean Water and Sanitation, 7. Affordable and Clean Energy, 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities, 12. Responsible Consumption and Production, 13. Climate Action. 14. Life Below Water, and 15. Life on Land.

A significant hope lies in young people whose innovation, drive and growing engagement in environmental sustainability has the potential to mitigate environmental risks and grasp new opportunities in sectors such as green technology, eco-tourism, and renewable energy. This leadership series aims to equip Delegates with new thinking, channels of support, and action plans to protect the environment.
